“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” - Psalm 32:8

I fingered the daily Bible reading guide until my eyes reached that day’s date and reading assignment: Psalm 20. After flipping my Bible there, I pinned my eyes on the first verse. But then I glanced at the clock—and realized that time had slipped by without my awareness. I have no clue about what I just read. Did I even finish the chapter? Nothing registered in my memory. Can you relate to my inability to focus? The above episode happened following my father’s unexpected passing. For the first few weeks after we buried him, focusing on the words of the Bible became as futile as fantasizing that his death was somehow reversible—never mind that reading the Word had been my daily activity for decades.

Like grief, fear can also make it hard to focus. Someone who’s in the throes of terror won’t be able to focus on your words. It will take time and persistence for your supportive words—or the Scripture you quote—to pierce through their veil of terror. That’s because our nervous system is organized in such a way that fear automatically overrides parts of the brain that help us focus. Yet another reason it’s hard to maintain clarity is the state of the world. Our days are teeming with pings and buzzes, billboards, and bad news from all around. The overabundance of stimuli often drags in junk, which can easily diminish our focus and clarity.

Let’s not overlook the impact of psychological and emotional disturbance on our ability to maintain a clear head. Are you struggling with ADHD? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is as real a condition as diabetes. The same can be said about psychological trauma. For instance, a single mom who survived child abuse might freeze, followed by feeling anxious and uncertain about what to do if she discovered someone was abusing her child.

Today’s Scripture promises that God never takes a break from guiding us. He’s ever-present for major and medium-sized decisions. But that’s not all; we also have a God who understands our need for focus and clarity on a daily basis. He longs to partner with us through the ups and downs of life, including everyday activities. The witness of Scripture makes it plain that anytime we call on His name—whether for clarity, to help us focus on the task at hand, or anything else, He will answer. But if we’re distracted, or afraid, or too busy, and if pain still occupies pockets of our soul, we might not discern His voice well.

So, where do we go from here? If fear makes it hard to focus, check out verses that can help. If you’re grieving or struggling with unresolved trauma, consider finding the right mental health provider to help you heal. If you suspect ADHD might be involved, seek a professional diagnosis, so you can access the right medications. (This move requires a certain ease with psychotropic meds. If you’re not convinced this kind of medication is appropriate for Christians, seek the Lord—and your heart—about the matter first.

And if you’re often distracted, or simply too busy, perhaps it’s time to inventory your world. See if you can eliminate unnecessary tasks or sources of distractions. One simple trick is to program your phone so it won’t buzz every time a new text arrives.

As we pray the following, please feel free to only pray the portions that pertain to you.

Let's pray ...

Lord Jesus,
I confess that I often flounder because of the distractible state I live in. I may be too busy for my own good. Forgive me for every time I failed to still my heart to hear from You. Forgive me for allowing the busyness of life to steal my attention. If there are areas within my soul that are still wounded, I ask that You would send me the right resources, as well as people, to help. I promise not to resist. I also ask for your intervention so that I won’t have to live with fear as a permanent house guest. Lord, please grant me clarity and focus as I tackle my daily routines. Thank you in advance for answering my prayer.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
